how to highlight text created in essential graphics

Hello - I usually highlight words on an imported text still by creating a box over the text and then chosing "multiply" under opacity - but that trick doesn't seem to work with text I created myself using the essential graphics panel. Suggestions on how I can highlight MY OWN TEXT? Thanks!
