How to Import Editable Shapes into Premiere Pro?

Is there a way to import complex vector shapes from illustrator into Premiere Pro to come in as shapes without manually having to use the pen and rectangle tool in Premiere Pro to re-draw them all over again?

What file extension should I save the illustrator file?  When I bring it in its not editable and becomes a solid image.

Another alternative is to use a comp to AfterEffects, and work on the Ai graphics file in Ae. You can edit an Ai file "over there". Anhy work done in Ae updates on the comp in Premiere.

I know I'm late to this party but...  man, I'd love the ability to copy-paste bezier shape stuff from Illustrator into a free-drawn shape in Premiere, just like one can do from Illustrator to After Effects.  Adobe, can this be a feature request?

Thanks, Neil. Your method works best. I was able to recreate everything in After Effects and make the adjustments there.  Thank you once again for your quick response.

Ai files get rasterized on import.

You can edit them by selecting the image and hit edit orginal. Illustrator will open with the image.
