How to set Premiere Pro 2025 as the default app on Windows

Premiere Pro 2025 is now installed but Premiere Pro 2024 is still kept.

When I right click on Pr file and then select "Open With", Windows does't give Pr 2025 option. And even if you'd select "choose another app" and find the Pr 2025 app to open, it'll revert back to Pr 2024.

I don't want to uninstall & reinstall.

After choosing another app, you hit Always.

Try opening 2025 first and then select your project.

I believe you need a different option for this, your screenshot is from the 3rd button, which is not applicable here.

Select the 1st (top) button, (Step 1) here's the steps:

1) Click - File Type Settings

2) Click - Context Menu

3) In the search box enter .prproj

4) Double click the .prproj item in the selection list

5) Double click the Open command in the list

6) Change the path to the version of PP you want

7) Click <Next>, and then <Save Context Menu>

So you are right - I had finger trouble and selected the incorrect option in haste ....

As my Windows 11 machine is now corrected by the 'sledge hammer technique' earlier today, I've just tried it on my Windows 10 back up machine which was also not selecting Premiere Pro 25 on double clicking .prproj extensions.

Windows default apps selection did not help it.

I followed your notes and yep its all working now - thanks for that, much appreciated.

I've got that Windows Tool noted for future occasions, as you said , very useful !.

Fix is uninstall Version 24 - then reboot - and Version 25 will be properly registered to .prproj extension.

The re-install Version 24 again

I spent 1 hour with Microsoft then 1 hour with Adobe support, I did not get any rational technical explanation why, but my guess is maybe Windows registry minor corruption for the mulitple Version 24 premiere pro installs.....who knows?.

I did ask Adobe support to register as a bug but seemed reluctant to do so. I have requested a call back from Adobe Level 2 support on this ....just in case it happens again.

After 10 mins research on this it seems Windows 10 and 11 have quirks in this area. So it is a Windows issue.

Most solutions involve editing the registry manually. Possible with care and always take a copy first .

I'll see if a Windows patch exists first to fix this.

I downloaded the utility and tried this out.

When opening it - unfortunately no Adobe programs are shown as registered apart from Adobe Acrobat and Animate 24 which is a bit weird , so this does not work for me

See below list of only regsitered programs shown from this utility.

I will have to continue to search for a solution in the meantime.

I don't particularly like editing a Windows Registry unless you are 100% sure what the correct solution is.

I am working in the very latest Windows 11 release.

The Adobe creative suite apps are definitely registered - I can see them in the normal Windows 11 utility to assign a default app but not Premiere Pro 25.0?

At present the only way to open a project in Pemiere Pro 25.0 is to open the program first then select from your latest list or the Open Project button - as @Ann Bens comments above.

This is not the correct solution to this problem though.

Double clicking a .prproj project file will only open any project in Premiere Pro 24 for me. Its not a show stopper but inconvenient.

I think Windows doesn't like multiple Apps versions capable of opening same extension (I have PPro 25,24,23,22,21 on my machine to support older projects where Adobe might have removed functions for example).

My Windows 10 editing machine also has same problems (the default there is PPro 22 for a .prproj file) so it is not a corrupt installation on either machine I don't think. Its a generic Windows issue and I will raise a ticket with Microsoft on this.

Ive got this same problem.

I select Premiere Pro 2025.exe as the target app in the Project Files/Adobe/ Adobe Premiere 2025 Folder to open for .prproj extensions but Windows 11 ignores it and goes back to 2024 version ??

Can't get this to work

Any ideas?

Surely Creative Cloud Desktop should set the 2025 version as the default automatically after installation.

At the moment, I can only open the project after opening Pr 2025. But, I want to be able to open the Project by double clicking on the Project file itself.
