Question

I can't export an XML without Premiere Pro completely crashing

I’m currently editing a wedding and I’m trying to export my timeline as an XML so I can grade it elsewhere, but as soon as I hit export and choose a save location...Premiere Pro freezes and sometimes freezes my whole system forcing a cold shutdown unless I can force quit it in time.

I’m using Premiere Pro 26.0.0 and my iMac system is running Tahoe 26.3, really need a fix for this, as its making me regret even doing this edit on Premiere Pro. Alternatively I could probably export as a PRORES 442 and then grade it elsewhere but as this is a huge project exporting QT 442 will give me a huge file

PS: I have tried clearing my cache, proxying the original footage, moving my project to desktop/hard drive as well as attempting to export different section of the timeline

Thanks in advance
Josh

There's an old trick that can help with this to troubleshoot if this happens again. You can use this same technique even if you're trying to export a clip, an XML, or anything from the timeline.

Duplicate the timeline twice, then delete the first and last halves from each of the new timelines. Then try the exports for each half. If it works on one half and doesn't work on the other, take the half that doesn't work, duplicate it twice again, and have those two new duplications. Then export each of those quarters of the timeline and see if you get the same issue on one versus the other. You can keep halving each section and potentially narrow it down if it's a problem clip or problem effect.

    Hi Josh,

Sorry to hear about this issue. Is this happening while exporting XML from any specific project? If so, did Joëlle Bh’s suggestion help?

    Thanks,

    Hi Sumeet,

I’m not sure if this universal across all of my projects its not a workflow i use often, but it definitely happening on this specific project, Joelle’s suggestion helped but didn't fix.

    Thanks

    Hi Josh,

Since you’ve already tried clearing cache, using proxies, moving the project, and exporting smaller sections, please try the following:

Import into a new project: Create a fresh Premiere project and import your existing project.

    Hi Joelle,

Thank you for your suggestion, this didnt work sadly! My only solution was taking my hard drive + project to a friends iMac and exporting there, making a new timeline worked for a smaller/shorter timeline but not for the main project that i’m on

    Thanks though
