I keep losing links to media

I'm editing in a project which has .mts files from an AVCHD camera and I did the right thing during import and used the media browser. The edit has gone well but now I'm starting to see 'media offline' messages, even for clips that are used on the timeline. When I right-click on the preview in the project panel, I don't get the option to link them again. When I double-click them or choose Reveal in Explorer, Premiere Pro crashes. I've also had a crash trying to 'Save As'.

I've restarted Premiere Pro and can edit for five or ten minutes before I start seeing the media offline messages again. I've tried restarting the machine, too. And last time it happened, before restarting the machine, I couldn't get Premiere Pro to open at all. Not via the start menu, the taskbar, nor by double-clicking the project file.

I've restarted the machine again, and successfully opened Premiere Pro, so now I'm expecting ten minutes editing time, and very regular saves, before I start losing my linked media again.

Any ideas what's happening? The media files are on the same SSD as the project files.

I copied the clips and the project to another machine. When I opened the project on machine two, I had to link the media again. Because there was nothing in the media cache on this new machine, it started to 'conform' the media files and took a long time to do this. I think I might have started work on machine one before all this conforming had finished. Could that have caused the linking problem?

I completed part two of the edit on the original machine by starting a NEW project. I waited until all the AVCHD clips had conformed before starting work and completed the edit without a single broken link or error.

My takeaway from this is that I must let all media load and conform fully before starting to work with clips.

    OK, a bit more information to add this morning. I managed about 30 minutes of editing. One clip preview was greyed-out in the project panel, for some reason, but I ignored it. After half an hour another clip disappeared, this time showing the 'media pending' message.

    Each clip I clicked on turned to a media pending message. I saved my work and closed Premiere Pro. When I tried to reopen it, via a taskbar icon, it did nothing. Under task manager I could see that Premiere Pro was still running in the background and using about 12GB of RAM. I clicked 'end task'.

    Right now I'm reinstalling Premiere Pro, after running a Windows update and uninstalling the app from the Creative Cloud desktop app. I'll let you know if the problem remains. I will also move the whole project over to another machine.

    Thanks Jim, I think your guide is useful and will save it.

    Unfortunately, the areas you pointed me towards are not going to give me the solution, I don't think. I don't have any third party virus protection and my machine meets all the criteria for steps 4. It only connects to the internet for updates.

    I've finished for today, but will look through your lists in the morning.

    Hopefully, someone will have experienced a similar issue to mine and can give me specific advice overnight.
