Question

Ideal export setting for Instagram Reels without desaturation or large file size

I've been going around tons of tutorials or forum posts tirelessly to find a solution to the export problem I'm facing, to no avail, unfortunately.

What happens is after I export my video the color is desaturated, and yes, I did manage to get around this problem by using an external LUT (QT Gamma Compensation.cube). However, there still remains to be a stark difference in color & grading with my original video and the exported video when I use h.264 format. The only way I could keep the original quality was by choosing to "match sequence preview settings". Now everything seemed to work perfectly well, except that my file size had grown gigantically. Although I don't mind the relatively longer time it takes to export my video or the upload time to a social media platform, the problem is that Instagram will compress large sized files which will result in terrible quality.

There has to be an easy solution to this problem and I can't be the only one facing this. I do hope I'm missing out on something and apologies if this was posted somewhere else here on the forum but would appreciate any useful feedback.

Thanks

First, do you have a Mac with the monitor option for HDTV Video (Rec.709-Bt.1886) ?

If you do, that accomplishes two things:

  • it ties in what you see in Premiere with what you see outside on your Mac ... no compensation LUT needed ... and
  • it ties what you see in with the rest of the non-Mac video "world".

Second, there can be several things causing display issues, from proper color management settings (and there's now a fair number in Premiere that must all be correct) to the OS monitor settings to the settings of the monitor itself.

This is why getting the information on how your monitor is set, and the CM settings in Premiere, are necessary.

Everyone's mileage always varies ...

PS: Some people have said that setting your working color space to Rec. 709 fixes the problem, however, interestingly that completely washes out my video after export. Instead, only Rec. 2100 HLG seems to work for me and this option is not available with h.264 format but only with matching sequence preview settings in which case I end up with the gigantic file size that doesn't work for me to upload anywhere as it gets compressed and leaves me with bad quality.

I used an iPhone 13 Mini with 4k 30fps video settings to record.

Thanks again
