If my proxies are watermarked, should I be able to see the watermark in the program window?

I've used proxies before - and believe I'm familiar with the workflow, but am having an issue with a multicam sequence, and proxies.

I have 3 x 4k files (each on a different track), for which I've created proxies initially at 1280x720, and most recently all the way down to 640x360 - and I still cannot get smooth playback for editing.  Only in the last round of generating proxies - did I put in a watermark and when I toggle proxies on in the program window, I cannot see the watermark?  I've also confirmed that the proxies are attached.

I've selected 1/2, 1/4 and even 1/8th resolution in the window - and cannot get smooth playback.

Having the issue on two Macs; 1 x Mac Pro and 1 x 2018 MBP - both usually OK for a bit of heavy lifting.

Keen for any help please.

If your proxies have a watermark you should be able to see that when proxies are turned on.
