Imported.ai files don't honour artboard size/crop?

Hi There,

How do I get Premiere to honour the artboard size/crop when importing .ai files. The whole thing comes in with a white background that covers the entire viewer in Premiere - even though the artboard is a square in Illustrator - see attached.

Obviously missing something basic! On deadline, any help much appreciated.
