Question

Importer generic error fix

This is both a bug report and solution incase anyone has this issue.

I have been having an issue where I would edit perfectly well on my main editing rig but as soon as I reopened premiere I would get a slue of  "Importer has reported a generic error." This would render my workflow useless. Disabling hardware accelerated decoding would temperarily fix the issue but it makes my workflow very sluggish. I then riverted to using my secondary system (laptop) which had no such issue.

The solution was installing K-Lite codec pack on my main rig. I had installed it on my laptop a couple of months ago. Works perfectly now.

Update on this thread. The issue is back. It seems that my projects are too big for the 32Gb of ram. When I open the project and Premiere loads all the assets my ram gets quickly used up and then the errors start. It's frustrating because eveywhere you read they say 32GB's is enough for 4k but thats only for small projects. My current project has too many assets and elements for 32GB. This problem does not happen with competitive NLE's. I still prefer premiere but they have to sort this issue out.

Although this still doesn't answer why my much weaker laptop doesn't have this problem.

Hi @TomTakes,

I thank you so much for the detailed info. It sounds like the team needs to investigate as to why your media does not play well with computers that look to be within the spec of system requirements. I will ask around to see if that this is a known issue or not. There was the 24.1 update that happened in early December. I wonder if you could roll back for now to be clear of the issue. I have to ask for your patience on this one while I search around. Sorry for the frustration.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi @TomTakes,

Thank you for writing in. Sounds like you are having issues with errors, etc. Can you give us full system specs (CPU, HD, RAM, GPU), the media you are using, and any details about your workflow. Please also be very specific about the media you are editing with. Is it an editing codec like ProRes or an acquisition format that is of a lesser quality media, like H.264 with a variable frame rate? Media type makes all the difference. Many people create proxies or transcode for a better editing experience.

Ann is right: K-Lite is poison. Something else is afoot. I hope we can help you figure it out.

Thanks!
Kevin

It is in general recommended not to install K-lite on your editing machine. It can mess up your codec. You are now probably using a lesser codec.

Agreed but this is the literal only way I can use premiere pro. The problem
isn't on my side. Premiere has a bug that is not getting resolved. So far
this is the only way. You don't have to use it but for those experiencing
what I did this is a working option. I've tested it and its working
perfectly. I went from completely broken to working. Perhaps provide an
alternative solution instead to giving only criticism. Worth a try.
