Importing Subtitles into Premiere: Italics disappears

Hi everyone,

I am having troubles importing subtitles into Premiere, as italics disappears (it is visibile as <i></i> in Notepad and on subtitles softwares such as Subtitle Edit). If I re-enter it manually on Premiere, it works.

I am following this procedure: https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/working-with-captions.html and exporting my subtitles in Subtitle Edit as .srt with encoding UTF8 with boom.

The weird thing is that some months ago I did the exact same thing (imported .srt into Premiere) and everything worked out, there were no issues with italics.

Can anyone help me? Is it maybe due to a Premiere update or something?

Thanks

I believe I have this issue here. I’m importing .scc captions. The network wants certain captions burned-in with specified font, size, color, size, etc.

So, I import the .scc and select to import it as a Subtitle, and select the Track Style I’ve created. Unfortunately, this removes italics created by the subtitle creator, which is important and specified by the distributor as well.

I can import it without a Track Style, and then simply select all captions and manually create the track style. This retains italics where they’ve been imported as such.

It would be great if it was possible to have a Track Style apply, but retains italics or bold weighting as per the imported subtitle. In other words, it would be good to have the Track Style ignore certain attributes.

@alice_9908,

I just tested on PR 25.3.0 on Win 11 and it is working for me. I used an srt export from PR; it is UTF-8 with BOM. I tested italics, bold, and font color.

What version of PR are you using? Windows or Mac?

Can you provide the srt file for me to look at?

Hi!
Thanks a lot for your answer.
A colleague of mine is actually taking care of importing subs into Premiere (Mac, latest version), so sorry if I'm not really precise or clear but I've actually never used the program.

We figured out what the problem is: if she imports the srt, it works normally, italics and all. If she applies Text Style (I hope this is the right term, anyways font, size, position etc), italics disappears, as if the sub encoding gets overwritten.

Again, the weird thing is that last year she imported the srt files and applied Text Style and everything worked? Maybe it's due to the new version or something...

If you have any idea thank you!

@alice_9908,

Yes, makes perfect sense. My restatement: the import works fine - italics are there. A "caption track style" is applied. A caption track applies to all captions in the track, and it OVERRIDES/removes all faux text styles: italics and bold. I have not tested this in recent versions, but I don't think any change has been made to that behavior.

As a workaround, I'd be tempted to apply the style by selecting all captions, and just making the changes you need from the style. This should result in leaving the italics etc alone.

Post back and let us know.
