Inserting Black Video only works in visual, can insert into audio? Help!

I'm a self taught noob and after half a dozen youtube videos, I still can't figure out how to most simply create a gap of black between my clips and get the audio to line up. I have trailers previous to my film and I need about 3-4 seconds of black between each clip. It should be the easiest thing in the world but for the love of all that is holy I just can't create a simple honest to goodness gap! I learned about black video, did that, it worked in the video feed, but now my audio is off by the amount of seconds of the black video clip. I keep trying to insert it into the audio file so everything starts at the same time and I just can't. Can anybody help a poor simpleton?

Cut your footage first, then separate it, then put in the black video and then ripple delete the gap to line the footage to the end of the black video (assuming you put it right next to the first clip. You don't want to just drag down a black video on top of your video clip, it will overwrite the video and make it black. Use the cut tool to make 2 clips, separate and insert. Easiest way to explain.

You can simply drag a clip or selection of clips down the timeline and drop them. That will create a gap. Select the audio tracks also before you drag. Are your audio clips part of the single video file? By defualt, if so, those will stay synced with the video.
