Integrating film grain in a timeline with transitions?

Hi all, I created a timeline and edited along the timeline and now I want to overlay film grain. I bring in my grain, drop it above the timeline, set it to overlay, but now I have an issue. Whenever the screen is black, or there is a transition, the film grain is the only thing visible instead of the black screen. Is there a convenient way to transition in and out of the grain? My project is quite long and dips in and out of black several times. Let me know, thanks!

Ah, though it was an effect on an AL.

this is going to be tedious: you have to cut and add an e.g. dip to black or cross dissolve above those black areas or transitions.

Drop the effect on one clip.

Copy

Select all rest and Paste Attributes.

Hi Ann,

Please keep in mind that film grain is not an effect, it is a seperate .mov file that is set in the V3 location throughout the timeline, and then is set to "overlay" mode. Thus I cannot paste the attributes.
