Internal Software error PGC for encore CS3 !!! solved !!!

Almost everybody here knows the next error:

PGC "timeline name" has an error at xx:xx:xx:xy internal software error : %0, line timeline name - PGCINFO: name= timeline name, ref=BPGC, time=xx:xx:xx:xy

Where the y in time stands for the length of the timeline minus 2 frames. The BPGC error can also be FPGC or DPGC dependant on how many menu's there are in the project.

It kept me awake for weeks and after reading this forum several times and comparing encore CS3 with encore 2.0 filenames I found the solution.

This Error is a bug in encore witch has nothing to do with blank filename spots and sonic coding or codecs or planning your workflow with a pencil but pure with the combination Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and Encore CS3.

This is what generates the problem:

In Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 you build project with video, sound and chapters. Then you export the project via the Media Encoder not Multplexed.

Premiere CS3 then creates the following files:
filename.M2V (video file mpg)
filename.AC3 (audio file ac3)
filename.M2V.XMPSES (an adobe file with preview info and chapter pointers)
filname.XMP (??)

It is the .M2V.XMPSES file witch creates the PGC error. If you use the MULTIPLEX DVD option then ADOBE will not create the .M2V.XMPSES file so there will not be an error. This trick mentioned by ADOBE and many others is just to go around the bug instead of solving it. Also with multiplex you have just one sound track. I use two sound tracks like 5.1 and a 2.0 track witch you can choose in a menu.

Some people say it is the blank spots. Also not true. They have probably just erased the blank spots of the M2V file and forgot the .M2V.XMPSES file.

When you just delete the .M2V.XMPSES file and then open the M2V and AC3 file in Encore as a new asset, make a timeline and menu's and the project will built and burn. Only if you delete this .M2V.XMPSES file Encore takes a longer time to import the M2V file and will be without the chapter points.

Almost everything else will work like menu with sound and even a movie background (use M2V files). Only the motion buttons in a menu still wont work unless you use a black background !?!. Haven't figured this out yet. Only solution for this is use Encore 2.0. In this older version also the motion buttons will work without error's (everything else also so why buy CS3??)

Here is what you must do create a DVD without errors:

-Create a project in Premiere Pro, even with chapters.
-Write down all chapter points (minutes:seconds:frames)
-Create two new unique maps in explorer for example D:DVD1 and D:DVD2
-Export in Premiere with Media Encoder without the Multiplex:DVD but with NON to the D:DVD1 map
-Copy from D:DVD1 only the M2V and AC3 files to D:DVD2

-Start up Encore DVD CS3 or 2.0
-Create a new unique project in Encore for example "DVD" and save this in the map D:DVD2\
-Then use Save-as (under file) and pinpoint to D:DVD2\dvd to be sure that all Encore's files are placed in this folder.

-Select M2V file and make new timeline.
-Make chapter points (you wrote down the points, did you?)
-Create menu's, even with sound (AC3) and movie background (M2V)
-Then render project if you have used a video for menu background
-Finally Built and burnnnnnn!!
-If you like to use motion buttons in a menu then use Encore 2.0

I have double checked my work flow and it really works. I have built a project and burned with success Then I deleted the timeline and the M2V file. Copied the .M2V.XMPSES file in the used folder. Re loaded the M2V file in encore (this time much faster! and with chapter points). Tried to built and burn and back was the error. Also this happened in in Encore 2.0!!

Hope that this will solve the PGC error once and for all !!!

Jeff,

At first I like to ask you witch versions of adobe Premiere Pro and Encore do you use?

Secondly:

In Encore you can create a project with different file formats like m2v mpg mov wav ac3 and more. Encore doesn't bother where the files come from. It is just a transcoded file without a history.

I use Premiere Pro to encode my movies because encore only can transcode dolby 2.0 and then import the transcoded files in Encore for further DVD building

Once the files are imported in encore then it does matter if you move them. So after importing those files in Encore I do not move the files at all but leave them as they are.

I then can built a DVD with menu's and even motion menus but not the Animate Buttons.

When I use Encore 2.0 on the same files I can also make Animate Buttons.

Conclusion: Animate buttons do not work in Encore CS3. Why did they change the file setup of motion menus? It worked fine before CS3 came.

I've read all the long threads about these errors and also think that there are more reasons to create the PGC error. I do not state that this is the cure for all of them but it is for the error that you get if you work as clean as it can be. And yes I've read your book on how to use encore 2.0.

Marcel,

On your system, and with your workflow, the multiplexing trick works. If you read the very long thread on this error, you will find that for other users that get this error, your solution did not work for them on their system and with their workflow.

I've used elementary streams (.m2v and either .wav or .ac3) almost exclusively for years. I have exported from Premiere with and without chapter points. I have let Encore transcode my files. I have never had this error. So clearly other factors are at work.

Right now I think the error is caused by a combination of hardware configuration and workflow.

Your testing efforts are excellent. You are very thorough and detailed. However, your tests involve doing things to your project folder that I believe contribute to this error in the first place - altering files in the project folder on your own. Because of this, I think your conclusions are incorrect.

Jeff,

Sorry to hear that the solution I have tested multiple times on multiple cases does only work for some cases as you say.

About my other assertions you say I'm wrong. I disagree on that. The multiple sound tracks, you're right. I made a mistake. With multiplex you can indeed use multiple sound tracks and it will work as well. I've tested it. Sorry about that.

On the .m2v.xmpses: sorry I'm right. Deleting it will solve the problem. With multiplex Encore creates a .mpg file instead of a .m2v file (both mpg) and also a .mpg.xmpses file without an error. The error lies in the .m2v.xmpses file.

You can use blank spots in filenames. I've tested it. If you disagree then why does Encore itself create a file with blank spots like: sound 48000.pec and .cfa ??

The motion menu I think I've partly figured it out. I've compared the file list of CS3 and 2.0. The creation of a motion menu in those two encore program has changed. While the 2.0 version creates a .mpg file the SC3 creates a .m2v file.

You can compare the following file structures:
2.0:
Cache\media cache files\mlf.cache.macc\
Video_Fpgc_Lsf.mpegindex
Sources\menus\
Video_Fpgc_Lsf.mpg
Video_Fpgc_Lsf.mpg.xmpses

SC3:
Cache\media cache files\mlf.cache.macc\
menu_mm.mpgindex
Sources\menus\
menu_mm.m2v
menu_mm_temp.xmp
menu_mm_temp.m2v.xmpses
video_cpgc_bsf.mpg

Menu stands for the name of my menu. Video is a name created by Encore.

As you can see the SC3 uses a .m2v file instead of a .mpg file. Besides that it also creates a 1 frame long .mpg called video_cpgc_bsf.mpg in witch the first frame of the menu is shown.

Somehow during the creation or building up a connection the .m2v or .xmpses or .mpg in CS3 is corrupt. Deleting the last two won't change a thing, still an error. The first is your motion menu movie and can't be deleted.

That is why you need to use 2.0 instead of CS3 if you want motion menus.

I won't say that my solution will help for all problems but it will help for those who have a clean non Internet computer and also work in a structure order and still get the unexplained PCG error.

So only copy the M2V and AC3 file or use Multiplex DVD witch indeed works as well

If you still disagree please be more specific on witch points and ground. Maybe we can then find the cure for the motion menu.

Marcel,

This solution has only worked in some cases. Certainly not in every case.

As for your other assertions - I'm sorry to say that you are wrong.

Good luck in future projects.
