iPad Screen Recording/DSLR File don't sync up while doing picture in picture

Hi there,

I'm new to using Premiere Pro. I think I have the basics down but I can't seem to find an answer to this issue and am hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. 

 

I am have recorded a course I want to publish. I used my DSLR to record me drawing on the iPad in Procreate and used my iPad to screen record at the same time.

 

When I pull them both into Premiere Pro and begin editing, my screen recording ends up significantly off from the DSLR footage. I believe it has something to do with the frame rate, but everything I've done to attempt to fix it has not worked so I think I'm just doing the wrong thing. The first few minutes lines perfectly but then just starts lagging behind the DSRL. My DSLR is set to 60fps (which I now reliaze should have been on 30fps) and my iPad apparently records at about 30 fps. Maybe I'm not doing the math right?

 

Is there a fix to this or do I need to reshoot my course? And if I need to reshoot my course, is there a way to record the DSLR and iPad screen at the same time directly into Premiere Pro?

Just to add info to this, I did a screen recording on my iPad Pro and looked at the Properties in Premiere Pro.

Properties reports the iPad Pro screen recording as 53.02 frames per second and Variable Frame Rate Detected.

 

This is consistent with what Steve_Griffiths is saying. For better sync, transcode the clip to Constant Frame Rate using an application such as Handbrake (free), ffWorks (paid), etc. and then import the result into Premiere Pro. (Adobe Media Encoder can transcode, but I’m not clear on whether it can convert VFR into CFR or just preserves whatever the clip started as.)

 

iOS and macOS screen recordings tend to be captured at 60 fps, not 30fps, but I think it shows up as 53.02 fps because of it being variable frame rate.

Sort of, and that might be worth trying. But probably not directly into Premiere Pro. You might try software such as OBS (free). It lets you run multiple video sources into OBS and combine them into a single video using live switching, picture-in-picture, etc. OBS primarily designed for live streaming, but you can record the result with settings you specify, so you could then take that recording into Premiere Pro. Because the DSLR and iPad would be recorded together, they would naturally be in sync.

Thank you so much for adding to the other answer! My video showed my iPad screen recording as 30.something fps, so I'm going to try this. Luckily, I've used Handbrake for other projects so I have it and can use it to convert. Thank you SO SO much! I greatly appreciate both of your help!

Jen, it's very likely the problem you have is that your iPad screen capture is recording at a variable frame rate (VFR) rather than an exactly 30 frames per second. People have this problem with iphones and screen captures all the time. (search 'iphone sync' on this forum to see)

 

The solution is to convert your existing iPad screen recording from VFR to Constant frame rate (CFR) footage. On the Mac I use 'Uniconverter' or 'Apple Compressor' to do this conversion. Others suggest 'Handbrake' as a good converter. I've never needed to do a CFR conversion on PC - so don't have a suggestion for an application to achieve this.

 

Once you have your ipad material converted to 30fps (CFR) everything *should* stay in sync between your DSLR footage and the ipad recording.

 

In the future it would be better to have the DSLR and iPad records both at 30fps (or 29.97) but this is not the source of your sync issue. 

 

 

No simple way, as far I know to record yout DSLR and iPad directly into Premiere Pro.
