iPhone 13 footage is UNUSABLE in PremierePro

How is this even a thing? Seriously? I can color grade any other kind of footage, but as soon as I important iPhone 13 footage the color is ALWAYS shot. No solutions online. The best thing you can do is change how the footage is interrupted - but this does NOT fix the issue. The color gets closer to being accurate, but is certainly still off.

I am about to switch editing software after using Adobe for 10+ years. Absolutely ridiculous.

This is just a rant. I have researched for 8+ hours on how to solve this issue. There is NOT a solution besides using a different editing software.

Hi Cody,

Sorry for the frustration. My suggestion would be something I do with my own iPhone. I turn off any HDR recording and shoot in SDR (Rec. 709). Now, I have a more straightforward workflow that makes me happy. I believe you can change it in Settings. Choose Settings > Camera > HDR (or similar; my phone is older). See if switching that off returns your workflow to more manageable. HDR video is available here, but not many people actively use it.

I hope you don't switch software. If you do, it may be just as complex. Sorry about that. We're here for you if you need more help with your HDR or SDR workflow, whichever you choose. I have decided to stay with an SDR workflow because it is more straightforward, and my clients don't seem to mind. I have to educate them about turning off their HDR settings, but it's smooth sailing after that. Good luck to you!

Thanks,
Kevin

I wish this one were simple, but color management is anything but that.

We have to choose between working HDR or SDR, which inherently means learning more about adjusting the settings in our camera (in this case, the iPhone Camera app on iPhone 12 models, iPhone 13 models, and iPhone 14 models) as well as about adjusting settings in our non-linear editing application.

If you shoot in HLG, which has a wider color gamut, and want to keep ALL the color, you have to work in HLG all the way through the pipeline. No software can work with two different color spaces simultaneously.

So ... to use an HLG clip in native color space, work only with HLG sequences, with monitor/OS capable of actual HDR work in HLG, and export using the presets with HLG in the name.

Suppose you want to work in SDR/Rec.709 with wider gamut media. In that case, it doesn't matter whether you're in Pr, Resolve, Avid, Baselight, or whatever ... that wider gamut of media must be brought within the limits of sRGB color space.

So for SDR/Rec.709, work with HLG clips ... in the Project panel, Modify/Interpret Footage, and set the override to Rec.709. Use only sequences with Rec.709 color and presets that do not have HLG or PQ in the preset name.

Either process works as expected. Take your pick.
