iPhone XS footage doesn't play back properly in Premiere Pro CC 2019

With iPhone XS Max footage (1080p 30fps), it plays back full red frames randomly, or it plays with glitches (repeats parts throughout clip) and also randomly slows the audio down on non-slowmo footage.. The footage is .mov HEVC (h.265).

Premiere Pro says it supports h.265 files now in the latest releases, but it's a no go with iPhone XS h.265 footage.

I tried encoding them to h.264 and it didn't help, all that did was bake in the glitches...... Also tried the files on both my Macbook Pro and my Windows 10 PC. Same issue on both systems.

I'm running the latest version of Premiere Pro CC 2019 (13.0.2). My iPhone has been out for a few months now and this is CC 2019's 2nd update after the 2019 release..

Trying both automatic and original settings on my iPhone for compatibility; didn't help.

Why doesn't it work? How can I fix it? Unable to finish an edit right now.

Also, other bugs I've noticed in 13.0.2:

  1. Selecting footage while zoomed out a bit, then trying to drag and snap it to other clips earlier in the timeline doesn't snap properly. It leaves 1 frame of black, making me have to zoom in and drag it again, defeating the point of the snap tool.
  2. Sometimes if you cut a clip in half for example, then on the 2nd new clip, use the rate stretch tool and speed up the second portion, it adds 1 previous frame at the start of the second portion. So I have to zoom in, and delete one frame from the beginning of the second part that rate stretch was used on, in order for it to playback without the extra frame.
  3. Sometimes when using certain Luts I've added to Premiere, an error message pops up (Low level exception) and then it won't playback anything; I then have to restart Premiere for it to work again.

Can you upload a short clip to test.

Premiere 2019: glitchy, Premiere 2018:perfect.

So test it on 2018, if all goes well use that version instead.

I take video on my iPhone 8 and then have to load it to Premiere Pro Rush app and export the clip from there then use that new clip to import into Premiere Pro on my PC then it works fine in V 2019.  It's a pain!

Just to add to the queue of unhappy people, I also have this issue.  I no longer have the ios files that I took on my phone as they are on my laptop.  I have the same problems as everyone else - ios clips repeating and glitching in Premiere Pro whatever you try to do to fix.  It's especially frustrating when a clip does actually render properly then putting for example a title in parallel with it causes it to glitch.  This seems like a pretty basic bug that the software can't cope with an input device as widespread as an iPhone.  I for one will probably discontinue my subscription to Premiere Pro when it expires in December.

iPhone clips are notoriously bad to work with. As a general rule, I transcode those to either ProRes422 or DNxHD

I would recommend transcoding that footage to a more edit-friendly codec link Prores or DNx. The codec out of your phone is very processor-intensive for playback and the issues you are having may have a lot to do with your system configuration trying to decode the codec. As a general rule, always transcode mp4s and iPhone footage. Even on a powerful computer with top of the line graphics cards you will still get smoother performance by transcoding

That's not the point though, the issue is that Premiere can't handle the VFR of iPhone files. You have to use Handbrake or a similar program if you want to edit those files in Premiere.

Hi, I am also having this problem. I thought for sure the latest build of Premiere would fix it but nope. Davinci Resolve works fine so I just transcode the footage in Resolve, which in my case is fine because I circle back to Resolve anyway for color.  Still would be great to know that Adobe is working on a fix though- helluva lotta people have iPhones.

So! I just got a notice from ACC that there is an update for Premiere. Looked at the list of new features and noticed that one of them is HEVC compatibility.  Updated the software and now videos shot on my iPhone XS are playing back perfectly. Thanks for that Adobe!

As for today this does not work for me. Still.

Video recorded via native iOS Camera or DJI Mimo app does not render, preview nor play properly in any way. This is unacceptable for me. I googled this problem and there are tons of videos on YT with comments that this problem is appears in Premiere Pro (Newest version in ACC).

Videos recorded in HEVC des not render as they should.
On thy other hand videos recorded in compatibility settings - in H.264 work no problem.

Uninstalling Premiere 2019 and reinstalling Premiere 2018 is a horrible answer. It may be a workaround temporarily short term, but what's the long term true fix here? Adobe committed to this issue and proving an ETA for a bug fix / patch?

Dont need to uninstall: both run side by side.

As a quick fix if you've already recorded some video on iPhone that is problematic in PP, change the Camera app Format settings to Most Compatible (i.e. H.264). Then go to Photos and edit the existing video and make a tiny change (e.g. trim a tiny bit off the start or end) then tap done and choose save as new file. Transfer this new file to your computer and it will work in PP with no recoding required.

If you think it would be helpful to do a video on this let me know and I'll make a quick one for my YouTube channel.

I am having the same exact problem. I paid for a subscription to Adobe to be able to edit my Iphone XS footage, and my footage is all glitchy. Is it worth using Final Cut or a free program instead of premiere?

Same issue. Used iPhone Xs Max to Film footage and transferred .MOV file form phone to flash drive. I tried to import the file to a project in Adobe Premiere and at first it seemed like it worked. The video started to play and then just started glitching out for no reason I could discern. I tried renaming file to MP4 and no dice. I tried re-encoding into JPEG no dice. Nothing seems to work and really this sucks because I cannot afford an expensive camera my iPhone is the best Camera I got and if I cannot edit footage shot on it in Premiere than I might as well cancel my sub to Creative Cloud and get a mac book that comes with iMovie for free. Hopefully someone finds a fix to this or Adobe can patch it out.

Same issue here. All MOV files taken with an iPhone Xs Max fail to work properly on Adobe Premiere Pro Cc 2019.

I haven't found a solution yet, the videos can't be used as they are, they must be converted first. There must be a way to work directly with MOV files somehow.

I'm still having this EXACT same issue (sans the part about the red bars) with footage shot on my iPhone X.

I have spent hours troubleshooting this and trying every workaround I can think of. Some of it seems like it's working and then the exact same glitchy-ness pops up again. My job is getting reeeally tired of the billable hours spent on this (maybe they should be sending the bill to Adobe?).

A permanent solution that doesn't involve me using an app to splice all my files together would be great. A solution where Adobe just fixes a known issue and I don't have to find a workaround would be even better. Reverting to an older version didn't solve the problem either.

Help!

Hi Will Bartlett,

Sorry for the issues. Can you please file a bug here? Upgrade to Premiere Pro CC 2019 no longer supports HEVC h265 – Adobe video & audio apps

Thanks,

Kevin
