Is there a better way to skip frame by frame when doing ripping, rolling, and slipping?

I've just started using PP coming in from Final Cut Pro -- I'm still getting used to PP. 

In fine tuning an edit, as in, adding and removing frames, I can only get fine control by zooming into the Timeline and doing the edit from that close up view. Is there a way to get that fine level of control without zooming in, like a keyboard shortcut or combination of keys?
