Question

Is there a way to control if Premiere moves the audio or video track during Synchronize?

It seems like there is no rhyme or reason as to which track Premiere chooses to move in order to accomplish a sound sync when I select “audio”. I need to be able to control this, because it’s causing chaos on my timeline right now. Ideally I can select “move audio track to sync” or “move video track to sync”.

Please and thank you

You're not alone — Premiere Pro doesn’t provide a direct option to specify which track (audio or video) should move during synchronization.

Here are a couple of practical approaches:

  1. Manual synchronization

    • Zoom in on the timeline to clearly see the waveforms.

    • Drag the audio or video clip to align it with the other track based on visual cues, like a clap or slate.

  2. Merge clips

    • In the Project panel, select both the video and audio clips.

    • Right-click and choose “Merge Clips.”

    • Select “Audio” as the synchronization point. This creates a new merged clip with synchronized audio and video.

These methods give you more control and avoid unpredictable track movements when using the automatic sync feature.

There is a problem with "merge clips" ... which is that all audio metadata is lost.

The Multicam process does the same work, but keeps the audio metadata.

DO NOT use Merged Clips if you need to keep audio metadata, like if you need to export to audio workers later in the process.

Earlier clips will be moved to the right to align with the last clip that shares matching audio.

Which one is to the left to begin with? I think it matches to the farthest left one.

And out of curiosity, what are you using this for?
