Question

Is there a way to turn off auto-detecting VR footage?

I've had issues with Premiere where it labels footage as "VR" automatically when the footage isn't intended for VR. (Mostly videos I rendered in another program that were 1920x1920 but had black letterboxing at the top and bottom.) Turning off the setting (once I realize it was doing this) wasn't hard, but since I don't work in VR I'd really prefer to not deal with this every time I want to render a video for Instagram. I tried searching Adobe support but couldn't find any information on this. Is there a setting to disable VR auto-detection?

This really does need to be addressed. So many programs are in non traditional formats -- 2:1 for example. It's a monumental inconvenience to have to go turn off VR settings when I'm trying to meet a deadline.

Madness that there still isn't an option to disable auto VR video detection.

Could it be that perhaps your footage is somehow being tagged as VR in the other program you referenced?

Also on Adobe help page for "Support for VR Workflow" states that The auto detection is limited to specific frame heights of 960, 1920, 2048, 2880, 4096, 5760, 6000, and 8192." Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Support for VR Workflows

So you might need to choose a different frame size to avoid it. Although I just tried to make a 1920x1920 square video and import it into PP and it didn't get auto recognized as VR.

The footage was originally two PNG sequences exported from TvPaint and Maya, respectively. I made the PNG sequences into videos in After Effects, and the rendered videos from After Effects and put those into Premiere. I'm not sure why that would trigger the VR settings. That being said, making my Instagram videos 1080 x 1080 would solve this issue at least for now.
