Is there any way to check if footage is visible?

I am looking to create a script that takes a shot composed of multiple pieces of footage on multiple tracks in a sequence (think of a temp screen replacement) , separates the tracks of footage, and renders them individually, so that they can be given to a VFX artist to composite. It would be best if there was a way of just checking if a track's footage was visible and only render the visible footage. Is that possible?

TL;DR Is there a way of checking if a piece of footage is visible? (not just visibly muted as it could be completely under a visible layer that extends across the entire screen)
