Issues with Premiere Pro on a 9070xt (not sure if it is amds fault lol)
Hi guys, i've been having some issues with adobe and i cant really figure out wtf is going on, it is very specific so i'll try to give as much details as possible and all the information i can remember.
Also please, i KNOW amd is not the best for video editing, but the 9070xt costed me R$4.000 and the 5070ti was around R$6500 at the time so.... you can guess wich one i chose. The non ti 5070 was more expensive than a 9070xt when i got it.
First of all my setup:
-Ryzen 7 7700
-RX 9070XT
-32GB 6000mt/s
-M.2 nvme 2tb (7000rpm and yes it it have zero issues)
-2tb sata ssd (just for backup)
-Windows 11 home
For monitors i use a 27' 1440p180hz as my main.
On the left i use a vertical 24' 1080p144hz
And bellow i use a 15' 1080p60hz (i used to put the preview window there but it seemed to make premiere slower and crash more often)
Im using premiere 2025 but i had trouble like this in 2024 and 2026 (2025 is the less broken version, or the one where this issues happen the least). GPU ac
Im also using premiere composer (the only plugin i use).
Usually i work with h264/265 4k videos with high bitrate or 1440p VODs from youtube (but the issue happens even with less demanding projects and LQ videos)
If i remember ill try to record it and post it here too, cause i often know when it WILL happen. It is important to know that this is not a 9070xt exclusive, as my old 6750xt had the same issue, and i tested many different drivers and premiere versions as well, so i can uncheck all of those. Currently rocking Adrenalin 26.3.1 cause the latest one seems to have some issues so i decided to wait for a more stable release
Now the issue itself:
Im editing and moving the needle trough the timeline and all of a sudden the preview screen turns black, it doesnt show the video preview or anything besides a black screen. It can also happen when i import any video and try to move the needle through the timeline when it is still loading the audio preview.
When this happens i can move the needle and mess with the timeline, but IF i try to play the video(pressing space) OR if i try to close the program when this happens it stops responding every single time. And it wont come back (i tried waiting a few times, one time for more than 30 minutes lol) so i have to just close it on the task manager and reopen it.
This happens at least 6 times a day (considering im working 8-12 hours) and i noticed it happens more often when i use a lot of transitions from premiere composer.
My thoughts (but i dont have enough knowledge to know if these could be true):
-1st: i think it could be related to how w11 is handling fullscreen apps like adobe, because as i said, some times when i take the program off fullscreen it feels smoother for a while and also loads back the preview)
-2nd: i also think it could have something to do with premiere composer because as i said it happens more often in projects where i use a lot of transitions
-3rd: i dont know if it is related to that "driver timeout issue" that amd drivers have, but i did some things that fixed this issue for me while gaming and ever since i had no more crashes while gaming
-4th: i also read in other reddit posts that multi monitor setups tend to screw with adobe programs specially on amd cards, so that could be it too
I could try to make all my monitors the same resolution and refresh rate to see if it helps but id lose the 1440p180hz benefits witch would totally suck lol.
If yall have dealt with this and know how to fix it or make it better, please lmk.
I also would love to be able to use my preview fullscreen on the bottom monitor, it makes it so much easier to work with multiple layers of video and image while having a big timeline so i can see more layers
Edit: https://youtu.be/VPLySCg9qj8 heres one clip where it stopped working, but this time it surprisingly didnt crash when i tried to close it
