Question

lag in timeline with Premiere Pro even with proxies

I'm experiencing unworkable lag when trying to use Premiere Pro. I'm offline editing 4K and above (with Premiere and After Effects). I am using proxies but still get lag. I'm on a Macbook Pro 2019 V.12.6.2 with 2.4 Hz 8 core i9 processor, 32 GB of Ram and Intel UHD raphics 630 1536 MB.  It Doesn't matter what I do, projects above 1080p lag and are unworkable. I'm using a Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD at the moment with all the project media stored on it and a bog standard Toshiba non SSD drive for media cache. Are my external drives not up to the job, the processor not good enough or could it be something else or all of the above?

Media Cache should be on a fast SSD.

Thanks, what sized SSD for smaller 4K projects? (not commercial but up to 30 min narrative film for example)

I recommend 500 GB.

4k and up, proxies?

That rig may struggle with the larger frames sizes, especially if you throw Ae comps and other effects onto the sequence. The total amount of computation per frame grows exponentially by frame size.

Thanks I'm not in fact using AE at all in my current project. Simply scrubbing through the 4K footage on a small timeline with proxies attached is problemmatic.
