Lagging since last Update

Since around the time of my last update PPCC has been lagging to the point of not being able to complete any projects with higher than 720p quality footage.  Anybody else having this problem?

Ahh ... your media is a monster to work with, all long-GOP and some of it at least 4k. So the problem with the monitor playback is just that your computer is trying to both run itself hard for de-encoding then decompressing the media, and along with that, you're throwing in a heavy NLE and all its hardware needs. On a bit older laptop with middling capabilities.

I know colorists with monster machines, who routinely work with 6k/8k RED and Arri files "native" ... who always transcode all long-GOP media before even starting the project. That's how much harder on a computer those drone/GoPro/DSLR long-GOP files are compared to most other formats/codecs.

PrPro 2018 does take some horses to run smoothly. With that rig, I would definitely use the "create proxies" feature of PrPro, and use the smallish-sized Cineform proxy preset it ships with (don't worry about the frame-size). Toggle proxies on for playback (toggle proxy icon blue), and off for checking image quality (gray).

With media already in a project, select your clips in their bin in the Project manager pane, right-click "Proxies/Create Proxies". On ingesting new media, use the Media Browser panel, click the "Ingest" box to turn that on, and in the settings for that (wrench icon) select creating proxies using that small Cineform preset.

In the Program monitor, click the + on the far right lower corner, and hover over the icons until one says "Toggle Proxies", then drag it down to your control area to use it.

We'll need some specifics.  Use the guide below.

This on on new projects.  I typically use GoPro files in 1080p to 4k, and MOV (I believe) from a Cannon 5d Mark IV.  Hardly use effects, and this problem is just with getting the files to play smoothly in the preview window.  I cant even get 1080p to play smoothly at 1/4 resolution while I'm working in the timeline.  When i try to play a clip in the preview window the sound will start but the image on the screen is still frozen, then it will jump forward and freeze again or keep jumping forward in a choppy manner.  This also happens when I try to play the clips in the timeline.  The problem is bad enough that I cant effectively manipulate the clips in a manner that lets me create the project I'm attempting.  This happens with 1080p GoPro film and larger 4k files, however it doesn't seem so bad with 720p.

I don't know much about computers, I think mine is probably under-powered but its been working fine for a year. Here is my DxDiag.  I think this should tell you what my system is.

I thought it was a matter of not having adequate memory available so I freed up almost half a terrabyte, but it still isn't working. I tried erasing the projects and started them anew.  I also looked to make sure the sequence settings were consistent with the footage.  I don't really know what else to do

What's the gear you're running on, media used, and typical effects?

Is this on projects started in the new version, or on project brought forward, or both?
