Laggy playback of After Effects clips in premiere pro 2020

I get laggy playback of imported After Effects rendered clips in Premiere Pro 2020. I have a brand new 27-inch iMac with an 3.6 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9, 64 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, and a Radeon Pro Vega 48 8 GB graphics card.  It happens even when Premiere is using the built in 2 TB SSD  with all source files stored on that drive.    Is there something I can do to get a smoother playback?
