Latest Build not utilizing GPU

I have a 2017 iMac Pro with a Radeon Pro Vega 64 (16GB) GPU. With the latest build of Premiere it no longer utilizes the GPU for rendering and/or exporting. A 3.5 minute clips is taking about an hour to render. Yes I have the Metal option selected. I've rebooted and re-intalled Premiere Pro with no change. With the GPU history window open it no logner has very much activity while using Premeire or ME.

On the Mac side can you select Open CL instead of Metal?

There is no longer an Open CL option. Just Metal and Software only. I downloaded the Beta of Premiere and it is performing flawlessly so far.

I have heard of another GPU acceleration issue (related to ProRes RAW support) on AMD and reported on it a couple of weeks ago. Maybe it jiggered something loose? Hope your bug is fixed. Please keep us updated!

Hi Zenab,

I am so sorry about this. I am not sure what is going on with GPU acceleration and your machine. I have not heard of others on Mac with the issue. That said, it's possible that your configuration (Xeon CPUs, instead of an integrated CPU/GPU, for example) may be having some trouble as this model has been discontinued by Apple.

 

Perhaps this bug has something to do with macOS Monterey when matched with v.22.x? Not sure. When you've got a five year old machine running a brand new OS, you have to start considering the weak areas in your hardware/software chain, especially when bugs like this start to surface.

 

That said, I suggest that you file a bug on User Voice and place that link here. I would be happy to advocate on your behalf for a fix. In searching for a workaround, roll back to the version where the feature was working as expected.

First, what format/codec are you using? And are there any GPU-accelerated effects such as Warp Stabilizer, Lumetri color, or major image resizing going on?

 

I ask the questions because there are two different ways the GPU could be used ... completely separate issues.

 

For H.264/5 render/exports, the GPU might be used depending on the CPU and the GPU. But it's been said here that some of the AMD cards don't have some of the H.264-processing bits that some Nvidia cards do, so the GPU isn't going to get used for H.264 render/export operations.

 

The second issue is for the GPU-accelerated effects. Premiere's normal behavior is that the GPU is primarily reserved for GPU-accelerated effects, and is never used simply as an addendum to the CPU for general encodes.

 

So ... which is your issue? No 'hardware'/GPU use on H.264 encodes, or not for general encoding with other format/codec combinations?

Hello Neil,

This is a project I built about 6 months ago (with no issues) and I’m revisiting to update. It’s a mixture of .mov (From a Panasonic EVA-1), H.264, & ProRes. All the footage was shot 4K and it is  edited on a 1080 timeline (Resizing in multiple places). I shot this project in V-Log so there is a lot of Lumetri Color and a several shots have a warp stabilizer. Along with a few various effects (blurs). Six months ago (Whatever build at the time was) I could play timeline fine with maybe a dropped frame here or there. Now it won’t play any video while the play head is moving, I hear audio, but the video is frozen. When I move the playhead, it takes appox. 10-12 to update in the program window. So naturally I tried to render the timeline and what my Mac mini M1 did in seven minutes took approximately an hour in this iMac Pro. So the main issue is it acts like the GPU is no longer being utilized, based off the performance (and GPU history). Also, when trying to export it takes an extremely long time. I've compared a few things to my M1 Mac mini at home and the same project utilized the GPU when rendering, and plays the timeline fairly well without rendering.
 
I'll incluse two screen shots. One is the iMac Pro after about 20 minutes of rendering (10.32% complete) The other is the M1 Mac mini after about 7 minutes of rendering (93.42% complete).
 
I’m not sure if that answers you questions.
