Line and pattern issues in NTSC 60i MXF exports

Hello!

First, apologies if my terminology is wrong, relatively new to the broadcast space.

We’re working on a project that uses lots of old scanned documents. Not always the best quality and some already jagged lines/edges on the original files. When exporting as H.264 for online streaming, everything looks great. When exporting for broadcast as MXF OP1a, XDCAMHD 50 NTSC, I keep getting these issues with some lines and some patterns with fine lines (old pictures from newspaper scans) when there is slow movement of the documents on screen.

I’ve attached some images of sequential frames showing what I mean. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    @tim_9567 No worries, sounds like you’ve got it sorted.

    For the zooms and pans, it might help to use an effect like Transform, Grow or Zoom, which allow you to enable Motion Blur. These will help blend the fine lines more naturally when there’s movement.

    This issue is possibly caused by interlacing applied during export. Interlacing can struggle to reproduce fine lines in graphics accurately.

    My first recommendation is to export in a high-quality, non-interlaced format, then transcode that file to your interlaced format.

    If the issue persists, try applying the Reduce Interlace Flicker effect to the scanned documents, which will slightly soften the image.

    Thank you for the suggestions. I tried exporting a section as ProRes 4444XQ, then transcoding into NTSC 60i and the issue persists. The Reduce Interlace Flicker does help some but it really needs to be cranked up to make a significant difference (the source material is low quality) and it ends up too soft and distracting in a different way.

    Can you tell us the frame size of low res images, and are you adding any animation to them?

    Of course. Here is what I’ve been using. I have tried  with “Render at Maximum Depth” and “Use Maximum Render Quality” both on and off and it doesn’t seem to make a difference.
