link media generic error - only on some files

I have been using PrPro on Mac Sequoia fine for a couple months. Sequioa got buggy, adobe wouldn't open. Wiped hard drive - new install of Sequoia 15.4. reinstall PrPro (etc.)

open ongoing prpro project. some of the files won't load. Link media, find the files (in the correct file path), get a generic import error.

- clear cache
- disable plugins (I don't use any except maxon, buy hey)
- reset preferences
- check permissions on disk

IMPORTANT POINT - all files are on a hard drive with cloud backup - dropbox. All of them are downloaded to the hard drive (not virtual) 90% of the files link fine - it is only certain folders (and the files in them) that do not.

This has happened a couple times in the past 4-5 years, and I always figure out how to get access to the files on the cloud/disk. I am hoping to save myself the trial an error to figure out what I did to make it work.

Thanks for the update @teloscientist. If you have a backup of these files on Dropbox, are you able to re-download them at all, and see if they work? If you are still experiencing issues, would you be willing to share some of the problem files and the team can take a look? Sorry for the frustration.

more info. I moved the problem files to desktop. Some of them import from desktop. Others give generic errors.

Note: all of these files worked fine last week - before I reinstalled OS and adobe suite.

I am on latest version update 25.2.1 build 2.
also latest version of mac 15.4 (new install - updated to latest version)

The files I am having trouble with in this particular project are .mov files. But to be clear, SOME of the mov files work fine in this project (see image - blue files on track 1 work, red files on track 1 give me generic error) -All the mov files on track 1 are in the same folder. All of them open fine in quicktime.

"reveal in finder" is greyed out for the files that give me a generic error. When I open "link media" - the files shows up in the correct folder - the path that premiere uses as the "here is where it should be" is the correct path. (see image with quicktime icon). For the files that link in the same folder - yes, they show up on the correct path in my external hard drive.

all of the files in this project are on the same external/dropbox drive (in different folders based on type of file). PrPro links to some of them fine, others, not so much.

I also include a screenshot of the "link media" window. Notice that the .mov files shows up with the MOV icon. Normally, when the file doesn't give an error (when it links normally), it shows the content of the .mov file.

Just wondering if any of the folders are DropBox(ed).

Hi @teloscientist,

Sorry you're experiencing issues. What version of Premiere Pro are you on?

What type of files are you trying to link back to and having issues with? If you right-click within Premiere Pro on any of the files you are having problems with and select 'Reveal in Finder...", are you able to see exactly where the files are on your computer and are they showing the right path to your external hard drive? Just to make sure the path isn't defaulting back to your cloud/non-downloaded files.

Are you able to re-import (not re-link) any of these files back into Premiere Pro?
