Lost project files and media offline

Finished a rough cut for a short last week.  Returned to the project today to find recent projects offline along with associated files.  Rushes are still intact.  All rushes material was saved to two external hard drives for safety and then disconnected after copies saved in the C drive.  All projects madeusing C drive only.

Didn't encode latest version because I was going to refine it.  Looks like I'll have to start from scratch.

Any suggestions why this may have happened?

There have been some issues reported on this forum where Premiere is actually deleting projects - something to do with where the projects were stored and are getting deleted during a cache dump. My theory is this - NEVER use the "default" project save location on C: drive, and certainly do not save your projects in any cache or temp folders! I never have in the 15 years I've been using Premiere and have never had a project go missing like that.

When I start a New Project, I first create a New Folder on my dedicated drive and name it to suit the video project being worked on, and create sub-folders within it such as Video, Graphics, Audio, etc.

I create a New Project and save it to that folder I made. Now everything is together and will stay together. I can move the entire folder to another drive for backup, and everything needed is in there - the actual project file is not somewhere different than the media files.

Of course the scratch/temp/cache file directories in Premiere can be set to wherever, but my projects and media stay together. I know there are those that will disagree and say you need multiple unique drives for video, audio, projects, etc. but if the video drive is FAST (like a RAID) then I've never seen any performance issues keeping my stuff together.

    Just my two cents...

    Thanks

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the advice.  I agree with your file management system.. i try to operate a similar system. I guddled around with the "missing files" search and that's restored most of them. The tail end of the project is missing still, though, and I can't find the sequence name even.  Last thing I did was ro save it...but, alas, no trace.

It's not the end of the world...but it is annoying and something to be aware of.

    Cheers

    Hey Mike,

    This sounds weird!

Premiere Pro shouldn't delete project files and media. The one time that happened last year around April was related to a media cache setting that was patched immediately. That version (v 11.1) was called off, no longer exists and can't be downloaded. AFAIK, our analytics report that no one is using that version of Premiere Pro. Hence, I assume that's not your case.

Did you check the location from where Premiere Pro restored the files?

Did you try to use an auto-saved version of the project?

    Thanks,
