Question

Mac M1 Max on Rosetta and Premiere Pro unusable with C70 footage

Seriously, I'm using an M1 MAX on 22.4 and it's unusable.

How can there be this many bugs this far along with the M1 chips?

The audio clip waveforms constantly flicker.

Playback is choppy with just two clips of C70 footage (MXF Long Gop) on top of one another.

Rendering previews takes forever.

The comparison view while using lumetri doesn't work.

Lagging video in the program monitor when moving the position of clips or using lumetri.

I could go on and on.  And yes, I'm using Rosetta. Nothing helps. I'm truly close to jumping ship, this had made my job editing a nightmare.

Does anyone know the website for posting Premiere bugs?

Premiere on PC has been struggling with BRAW footage but handles ProRes nicely. Got a new Mac Studio M1 Ultra and it handles BRAW well, but crashes with ProRes. Yes, ProRes. I've just about had it with Premiere Pro, its tough when the tool is a barrier to getting the job done.

You should be able to resolve this with some troubleshooting.  I transcode everything to either ProRes 422 HQ or ProRes 422 LT and get great performance in Sequences with matching ProRes Video Preview settings.  2160p plays extremely well.

macOS 12.5.1 and Premiere Pro 22.6.2 and Premiere Pro 15.4.5 (I keep both installed).

All my software is updated and I've already done everything you stated in your comment. It just doesn't work on my machine. Thankfully it's working with my raw files, just not transcoded ProRes (which I had to do to edit on PC).

Long GOP really is a delivery codec, not intended for acquisition.

If you wish to blame anyone, it should really be Canon for implementing this in their camera line-up.

My suggestion is that you start working with proxies or - as I do - render out portions of your timeline that you wish to see without hiccups.

Honest question, how would you go about rendering proxies for 4 hrs of Long GOP footage?

a) have a big enough hard drive

b) let proxies render while you sleep and continue on the project the next day

I have done projects with 2TB of footage from 4 different Pocket 6K Pro cameras all recorded in braw.

Ha, this whole thread is hillarious now. Sorry, SwanMedia, you are on your own according to Adobe. I've even been told to use Resolve on this forum!

There is a uservoice forum, but I highly doubt how useful it will be: https://adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911233-premiere-pro

They don't seem to fix the things we say we need help with. You'd think they would use these user forums as a place to discover customer experiences and issues, but nope.

I don't think the problems with Premiere will be solved until they decide to focus more on customer retention than customer acquisition. They are spending all their time trying to create new features and layouts in an effort to gain new customers. These "improvements" end up breaking the software we have grown to love.

Sadly, Adobe has grown too big and is no longer focused on creating the best customer experience, they only want more money.

@scottwild

Support threads are pretty useless when they devolve into arguments.

Someone new to video editing should explore their options be it Premiere Pro, Rush, Resolve, Media Composer, Final Cut Pro, LumaFusion, Vegas, iMovie, or Photoshop (yeah, Photoshop can edit video).

I'm pretty sure we'll see the new Import/Edit/Export become a user preference.  I'm in favor of trying something that will make video editing easier for those that do not have the benefit of professional training or mentoring from an established video editor.  This was an effort to "focus on consumer retention and consumer acquisition" by making things easier.  From the UserVoice page, it's clear that some 284 users do not think so - maybe it was easy enough already.  What's a little strange, though, is that someone says that customer acquisition is important, and then in the very next sentence complains about "spending all their time trying to gain new customers" which is customer acquisition.  For support threads to work, the comments have to be constructive and not self-contradictory.

Premiere Pro is not freeware.  It's software for video editors who are, in theory, getting paid for their service as video editor.

This is what I'm talking about. Adobe apologists are all over this forum and will bend over backward to suggest that it's the users' fault that we are having these issues.

Open your eyes folks, Premiere is busted. This whole thread is full of people completely fed up with this treatment and you continue to make the problem out to be something other than Adobe.

When did I say customer acquisition is important and then complain to the contrary? I said they are spending too much time and money on customer acquisition and not enough on retention. Do you know the difference?

Adobe is fidgeting with so many things that they are screwing up their product. They are adding all these bells and whistles to attract new customers and are royally annoying long-time users. Don't get me wrong, all software should evolve over time and get better, but how is this better when I've talked with over 12 different editors over the last month and ALL OF THEM are having massive issues. I collaborate with a lot of production houses and every single one of them is up to their eyeballs in Premiere issues.

"Premiere Pro is not freeware.  It's software for video editors who are, in theory, getting paid for their service as video editor." Couldn't say it better myself. That's why the software should work as a professional tool and not break every two seconds like a freeware toy.

What happens when you trasnscode to ProRes and set your Sequence Previews to match?

@scottwild I couldn't agree more. Premiere is broken on both my M1 and M1 max and has been for the last year. I have the same exact issues you mentioned in your post. Flickering audio timeline, unplayable playback of xavc footage from my Sony Fx3s at any playback resolution, Playback freezing as timeline keeps playing and you cannot stop it. As you said when you are using this software to make a living it is hard to set aside the time to learn a whole new NLE. Adobe has failed M1 users very badly since launch. It baffles my mind how the revenue they make on these subscription fees cannot be allocated to fix simple and stupid issues like these.

Post the full details "here" for each problem, so the engineers can clearly understand what's happening on your system. "X is broke, fix it" is pretty much an unusable and wasted post .. .give 'em the details.

Premiere Pro UserVoice

And for what it's worth, this is a ... strange ... situation. Some users on M1s or PCs are getting awesome performance, some like you, awful. So give the full details so the devs can start sorting out the issues.
