Mac Spinning Rainbow Wheel Premiere 12.1.1

I have a newer imac with plenty of RAM and storage space...I am running Premiere Pro V 12.1.1 and when I have a project open in PP I keep getting the spinning wheel and the application freezes up and I am forced to quit out of it after about 2 minutes. Sometimes it happens soon after opening, sometimes a little longer after.
