Masking

When i try to mask (trying to change an oversposed sky for an interview, if there is a better way let me know) it keeps editing the whole picture, even though i have closed the mask. I just want it to edit the sky, which is currently so overexposed that it is white. I don't know if editing the lumetri color for basic color corrections effects the ability to mask.
