Mixing Aspect Ratio Question

I'm cutting a feature that mixes a couple aspect ratios. Principal was shot ARRI 3166 x 1782 and I'm working with 1920 x1080 proxies.

Three days of additional photography were shot at 3424 x 2202 and I received 1920 x 1038 proxies for that material.

This is the first time I've dealt with this issue and am wondering what the best workflow to integrate the two formats would be.

Thanks in advance.

    pps...

since downscaling to the 1080p timeline, I think I'd make a 2k proxy for both media so you can downscale to the 1080p timeline

can make still of your sizes in photoshop to visually see the basic differences in aspect ratios...

    those are 2202, 1782, 1080

p.s. I left out the proxy stuff cause it's assumed you'll make them as suggested by Jim

If, as assumed above, you got the original stuff … and one is 16:9 and another type of media is wider... you basically should downscale from the original to a common 16:9 ratio for both … meaning that the wide stuff would be downscaled to fit the height and you'd leave a bit of the right and left frame OUT of your frame ( program monitor).

An example. A network shoots a show anamorphic. It doesn't want to have black bars on top and bottom so they lop off the sides.

There is a 'safety' frame in camera ( and on playback / DIT ) to show what will be lopped off... so it is framed correctly within the 16:9 ratio.

Essentially that is what you are dealing with when downscaling to fit the height...

If, conversely, you UPSCALE anything you lose quality.

    1. Acquire and import the original media and create your own Cineform proxies using the native PP proxy process below.

Work offline using proxy media |

    2. My preference is to create a sequence at the highest resolution needed and work there.

Well that's a fun choice. Been nice if they'd shot the same proportions wouldn't it?

I guess at this point I'd check what ratio the final deliverable will be, set a sequence to that, and scale these both onto that sequence.

did you get the source material AND the proxies or ONLY the proxies ??
