Modifying audio channels introduces distortion

I'm modifying video with 5.1 surround audio to 1-track stereo (L:C, R:C) to isolate dialogue, but when I do, the audio comes out distorted, and I can't find any options to decrease the initial gain in order to prevent this.

 

Do I have to edit the source audio gain before modifying the audio channels?

 

Any help would be appreciated.

I just tried modifying a clip so only the Center channel was being used and didn’t find anything out of the ordinary.  Can you post a video showing what you are doing so we can see more clearly?
