Question

Move clip between track keeping time

Hi everyone

I look for a shortcut I used to use on Final Cut pro 7.

When I moved a clip on a different track I hold SHIFT and the clip was forced to keep the same time on the new track.

Do you have any idea how to do that on Premiere Pro ?

Cheers

Pierre

Here's what I do: After selecting the clip I want to move, I press the <Up> arrow to move the playhead to the beginning of that clip (assumes you have the cursor near the clip you're selecting - I have a keyboard shortcut that moves the playhead to the cursor if not - will describe below). Then I just drag the clip up/down and keep it snapped to the playhead as I drop it onto the new track. This is with snapping enabled of course, which I always have, but if you prefer to work with snapping off you can temporarily enable it during this procedure by holding down the 's' key during the drag.

To assign a shortcut to move the playhead to the mouse cursor, go to Edit -> Keyboard Shortcuts. Type "move playhead" in the command search box under the left side of the keyboard. That will bring up "Move Playhead to Cusor". You can then assign that to a key by clicking in the area to the right of it (shortcut column).

good idea Horshack, just to bad that there isn't a SHIFT+left click, it's so easier

Select the clip you want to move to another track, Once selected use Option (Alt) + Up Arrow to move a track up or  Option (Alt) + Down Arrow to move a track down.

When I switched over from FCP-7 to Premiere Pro, the lack of having the shift+drag temporal position constraint really through me off for a while - then I found that when you are moving clips vertically on the PPro timeline - you really have to make an effort with your mouse to displace them temporally.

It's as if horizontal mouse motion is not recognized when you are dragging clips vertically -  unless it is a substantial amount.

If you click down and drag the clip to the track you want - I think you'll find (as I did) that you they will almost always land in the same temporal location - unless you move the mouse horizontally quite a bit.

At least that has been my experience.
