mpg file created with VLC without sound

I have created a movie clip from a DVD on my Macbook using the VLC player (current version). This file is an .mpg file. When I import this file into Premiere pro, I can see the video, but the sound is missing. The Media Encoder also only recognizes the file as an image file and not the sound. What is the reason for this?

This is usually an issue with Premiere recognizing the AC3 audio codec in .mpg files. I recommend either exporting from VLC as an H.264, or converting your .mpg file to H.264 using a tool like HandBrake.

How can I change the export setting from mpg to H264 in the VLC player?

No worries, Gerd.

After you click 'Convert/Save' in VLC, it will take you to the Convert window - there you should be able change the Profile to something like H.264 + MP3.
