Question

.MTS Interlacing

Hi Guys

I'm (finally) using CC2018 and have just exported an .mts file based project.

1. I dragged the clips into the timeline to create the sequence,

2. then I exported using the project settings, but set it to medium to keep the file size low. The sequence is fields based (upper first) and the export is the same.

3. But the result is a bad export with interlacing lines.

It's not for broadcast, so I've just reset the export parameters to progressive scan but I'd like to get to the bottom of why the export is so poor in case I need to export a fields-based file in the future. Has anyone any thoughts on why exporting using the same project field settings in export should return such a badly interlaced file or tips on how to avoid this?

Regards,

Graham

Does anyone have any comments on these settings?

Yes, if you export to H.264 and the goal is to watch the footage on a computer screen, smart phone, pads, upload the clip to YouTube, Vimeo, etc, you must to change the Field Order in the Export Settings dialog from Upper First to Progressive in order to get rid of the interlacing issues you see.

Thumb of rule:

Exporting a file to burn a DVD or Blu-ray, keep the interlacing when exporting.

Exporting a file to be viewed on computers, smartphones, pads, YouTube, Vimeo, etc export as Progressive. (a.k.a de-interlacing)

Which camera was used to shoot the footage?

I know that the Canon C100 records progressive in AVCHD and writes .mts files in a Progressive segmented Frame (PsF) wrapper. For some reason, PPro interprets this footage as interlaced, meanwhile it really is progressive. I have to use Interpret Footage and change it from Upper field to Progressive (None) in order to work correctly with this footage.

Are you sure your camera source files are interlaced?

Please check.

The camera used was a Sony NX100. I use a Z150 and don't have this issue with .mxf files.

Are you viewing the exported file on a tv monitor which supports interlaced material, or on your computer screen which does not? Any interlaced file is going to show artifacts when viewed on a computer screen.

These artifacts will not be apparent if viewed on a monitor that supports interlaced video.

Premiere avoids this display problem in the editing process by suppressing one field in the Program Monitor so that you are viewing one field only of the two field composite frame.

If you were to with the display to Display Both Fields, you would see the artifacts caused by playing interlaced material on a progressive display appear in your Program Monitor.

Extra, unasked for two cents - there is nothing inherently wrong with working in interlaced footage. You just need to preserve the correct field dominance throughout the post process, and then display it on a monitor that displays interlaced footage correctly (most tv sets).

Thanks, Meg. Yes, it's PC monitor. Maybe I'll export a copy to check-out on a TV just to see if the interlacing artefacts disappear.

You're exporting interlaced material to an interlaced format.  Scan lines aren't all that surprising.  To get rid of them, shoot, edit and export in a progressive format.

Thanks, Jim. As I mentioned, I normally use film with a Z150 set to XAVHD, so it's not a problem. But people I work with use an NX100; hence this little issue.

Export to what format? What is the end destination of the file?

Dont use Match Sequence Settings.

Post export settings with left tab to output with image

and post a screenshot if mediainfo with a mts clip.

Hi Ann

Sorry for being a right thickie and I know It's going to be obvious, but I've never posted and not sure which left tab you're suggesting (having a senior moment...)
