Question

Multicam Sequences Using Compositing/Green Screen

I have a very specific workflow that really drags down Premiere, and I’m wondering if anyone else works the same way and has come up with a speedy workflow.

I shoot mostly interviews on green screen using three cameras. When I go to edit, I composite each angle over the background, and then create a multi-cam sequence that contains each angle so I can “switch” between angles during the interview.

This really bogs down Premiere. I have to hit “play” multiple times for it to start playing. If I have to adjust a cut, it takes forever, and then try to start playing again can take 10-45 seconds for the sequence to begin playing again.

I have an otherwise fast machine. I’ve tried turning off FX while editing. This makes little difference because what seems to be happening is that Premiere is still factoring in the composited version in the background. You can see it turning the FX on and off while making changes or hitting “play”.

I reduce playback to 1/8 resolution. Slightly better, but not really making my life easier in any way.

Does anyone else work like this and have a good solution? I was thinking maybe I could use markers and go through the sequence without going to the multi-cam function and marking cuts that way and then using those markers to automatically make cuts and switching angles using the shortcut menu? I’ve been dealing with this for years so I’m used to it, but have finally decided that I need to try to find a good solution so I’m not getting so bogged down.

TIA

Here are my specs:

Apple M3 Max
64GB RAM
Tahoe 26.2

Premiere

26.0.0 Build 27

I’m guessing you are using an effect like Ultra Key to remove the green screen? If so, is it applied to each individual camera angle inside the multicam, or the multicam itself?

Huh  ... I’ve done a couple multicams with three cams, two green-screened, not three though ... and had no playback issues. Win10, 24 core 3960X CPU, 2080Ti GPU, 128GB of RAM. Not nearly as new as your rig. That’s sucky behavior.

What’s the codec, framesize, and framerate of the clips used?

That’s good to know you are not having any issues. So, you are using the multi-cam window, playing it back and able to easily switch between angles with no lag, even if you stop it, make an adjustment to the cut point and restart it? That’s what is really causing my system to lag. And again, even if I turn off FX, I can see that it is still accounting for them in some way because the FX flash on and off briefly as it tries to begin playback.

Yea, we’re getting very different behavior. I’m wondering if anyone else with similar media/computer as yours is having issues?
