Multicam Still Lagging with Proxies

I'm working with two 3 hour and 45 minute clips (1080p60, .MTS files) from a live event. I manually synced both camera angles in a sequence using audio, then nested that sequence and enabled multicam editing.

Even though I’ve created proxies (and even tried 480p CineForm proxies), playback is still choppy and lagging — especially when using multicam view. I've followed all standard advice:

  • Proxies are attached and working

  • Playback set to 1/4 resolution

  • Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (CUDA) is enabled

  • Global FX Mute is on

  • Audio follows video is off (I want to keep Cam 1 audio throughout)

  • Tried rendering the nested sequence — helps a little, but still laggy

  • PC is brand new: i5-13600KF, 32GB RAM, RTX 3070, SSD storage

Also, I need Cam 1’s stereo audio split into two mono tracks: one for music (left) and one for tap audio (right). I used Modify > Audio Channels to separate them before building the multicam, but Premiere keeps duplicating both channels into both tracks.

At this point, I’ve manually synced everything and I’m editing from that sequence. What’s the best way to convert this into a smooth multicam workflow without lag? And how can I preserve Cam 1’s split-channel audio correctly?

When I hit play I have to wait 30 seconds easy just for it to move and then the audio will be going with a frozen picture.  When it finally catches up I have to do it on the fly...once i stop it i'm screwed.

Any help would be appreciated — thanks.

I think I figured this out.  I'm posting for future people that might have this issue.  Bottom line I made a new project and new proxies using prores.  The main difference that I saw was that in the upper right hand corner of premiere I saw this circle saying prossing progress or somethiong to that effect.  I guess it checks your proxies or something.  Anyway..my original project was never passed 75-80%.  When i made the new project this one was at 100% in no time and I was flowing like nothing happened.  I wasted 2 days trying to figure this out when all this time I could have started a new project and new proxies while i went to lunch and it would have been solved.  Now, I don't know if this is the exact reason or if it will help anyone but this is what happened.  Hope it helps.  If anything else happens i will be sure to post it in this thread and keep it all in 1 place.

Glad you have sorted this out. Creating a new project.can sometimes be a good move.

Firstly the audio to split CAM1 tracks

You say

quote

Also, I need Cam 1’s stereo audio split into two mono tracks: one for music (left) and one for tap audio (right).

When you do Clip(s) select, Modify Audio, don't forget to select 2 No. Clips. This creates two separate tracks then you can map Left or Right to either Audio track so you can split out your audio as you want, check audio mapping in Multicam project.

Use Track Mixer or Audio Clip Mixer to balance your audio mix

See attached Image.

Before getting into the Multicam issues , you say its a new PC....

Do you get 'laggy' behaviour on a non Multicam 1080p project?. Have you tried it?.

Have you updated the Studio Driver from the NVidia Website for the RTX 3070?

If not, download the latest Studio Driver and select 'Clean Install' when the driver installation process prompts you to select this option.

I'm surprised you are having these issues on 1080P video clips with that GPU

Ensure the new PC is performing well on a Test project before you go back to the Multicam project.

I would also split the long 3hr 45min Video files into smaller session clips as you mention - to match the logical flow of performances you were capturing.

What video format do you plan to export the final video in?.

Thank you for responding.  The audio was never an issue.  Been doing it for years.  I don't know if you saw my last response.  It's all been taken care of.  I made a new project and new prores proxies and don't have any issues.  It had to be something within the old project and proxies not working as they should.  I had redone the proxies in so many formats within the project that something definatley could have gone wriong behind the scenes.  Like i said...Once I made the new project and new proxies, everything i mentioned went away.

Hi,

Thanks for the message. Those are very long files and a legacy format. Has this worked in the past? Did you try ProRes Proxy yet? Let us know.

Thanks,
Kevin

I've done so many versions i don't remember.   I used to have no issues.  Its' the first time with this setup.  My other computer with a rmd ryzen 9 and 3080 card has no issues but this one does.  Now...if I try making prores proxies...will I lose the 43 minutes I've edited already?  Actual;ly it doesn't bother me..I'd have to go over it any way.  i just want the format that will be smallest in size and allow my system to perform.  I'm willing to try anything.
