Question

Multicam template is 6h long

I am working on a pretty extensive TV project with project with 20 cameras and 20 audio clips, 3 editors assistants, 6 editors and 24 hours of footage for about a month. This requires a MultiCam template. The template is supposed to be 1 second long because of some empty audio clips that is in there (these were added after the first time we had this problem so is probably not related) and it is whenever you check the duration, drag it onto a timeline or open it in the source monitor. The problem however arises when you use the Overwrite/Insert features, using these the template suddenly becomes 6 hours of empty space except for the first second. Is there any way to change this 6h duration without making a new template and redo everything we have done until now?

I am on 26.2.2 Build 3 on a 2023 M2 Max Mac Studio

This happens because Multicam Source Sequences are essentially nested sequences. A sequence's underlying duration gets longer every time you add a clip - but it doesn’t shrink back down when you remove one. My guess is that at some point, this multicam clip, or the one it was duplicated from, contained six hours of content.

You have two options to fix this:

Quick fix: Load the multicam clip into the Source Monitor, where it will only show the duration of the actual clips it contains. Jump to the last frame and set an out point.
Template fix: If you're using this as a template, turn it into a sequence preset instead. This resets the underlying duration to 0 everytime.

To create the preset:

Select File > New > Sequence.
Enter your video settings.
Open the Tracks tab and click Load from Sequence at the bottom. This adds your existing settings, such as channel routing and track names, to the new sequence.
Click Save Preset.

Note: Each time you create a new sequence from this preset, convert it to a multicam sequence. Drag it into the Source Monitor, right-click, and choose Multicam > Enable.

One other quick fix is to deselect all the clips inside the multicam sequence, select all the target tracks and choose Sequence > Create Subsequence. This will create a new sequence with the same clips, but the underlying duration will be reset to the length of the clips on the timeline.

Those I believe are ‘danger lines’, they could happen when a clip is synced perhaps wrong, and the original media, and the current clip were different lengths, etc… here’s a FAQ on it:

I’m a bit confused by the question. A true Multicam Source Sequence length is dictated by what is in the multicam clip. What happens when you have multicam media inside your template ? (which I’m guessing you duplicate before putting media into it).

Since a true Multicam Source Sequence is usually created after some kind of sync operation, how you are syncing media that goes into the template?

It does not make a difference what the media inside is, the multicam overwrites/inserts as a 6 hour long clip with media up to the point it would have normally stopped and the rest empty. As i wrote in the post and showed in the screenshots, this only happens using the Insert/Overwrite features and not any other i have tried.

The media is synced by timecode as a syncmap and then moved to shorter multicams by using the template, the problem is that the new multicam clip (i do duplicate it before copying into it) doesnt shorten it to the length of the media when an editor tries to insert or overwrite.

Here is an example of the finished multicam

It is about 2,5 hours long and comes in as such when using everything other than insert/overwrite. When using any of those, there are 2,5 hours of media and 3,5 hours of emptiness with diagonal lines as in the third screenshot in the original post.

Hope this clarifies what im wondering. If its a bug, its a bug, if it can be fixed i would like to.

That looks like a good sync map. All I can guess is that something holds that odd length in the mulitcam clip since it’s not a newly created multicam but rather a duplicate of an existing one. I kinda feel like I’ve seen this a time or two as I do a ton of multicam work in Premiere.

But when you’re editing with a multicam clip, you’re usually setting an IN to OUT in the timeline or in the Multicam clip in the Source. That should negate this issue.
