I'm trying to enhance the audio on my short film I'm making for class but when I select my audio, go to essential sound and to enhance. It still tells me to select a mono or stereo clip. How do I fix this. The original audio was diegetic sound from my shots if that helps.

It looks like your clips are currently using a 5.1 audio channel format, even if they only contain two channels. To use Enhance Speech in the Essential Sound panel, the audio must be set to either mono or stereo.

Here’s how to update the audio format:

  1. Select the clips in the Project panel (not from the timeline).
  2. Go to Clip > Modify > Audio Channels.
  3. Set the Clip Channel Format to Mono or Stereo, depending on your needs.
  4. For Stereo, set the Number of Audio Clips to 1, for Mono, set it to 2 (one for each channel).
  5. Click OK to apply the changes.

After modifying the clip’s audio format:

  • Drag the updated clips into a sequence that uses Standard audio tracks (not 5.1).
  • Select the clips in the timeline.
  • Open the Essential Sound panel, assign a type (e.g., Dialogue), and click Enhance to apply Enhance Speech.

But is it mono or stereo? What does the audio clip show in the Properties panel?

Diegetic just means it's "sound the actors might have heard". Doesn't mean anything as far as the 'physical' form of the audio file.
