Question

My Red 4k footage is blurred at 100% zoom, and DVD is crap

Hey all.

I've finished my 30 minute film, shot on Red 4k- 4096x2048 resolution.  I have some key problems that I haven't been able to solve endlessly searching online.  Hope you can help.

Firstly, in the timeline preview, the footage looks great when I select 'fit' in zoom properties.  100%?  Not so much.  I cannot see why this large of footage would ever have trouble being crystal clear zoomed in.  Here's a screen shot:

Here's the clips properties, showing that there was no downgrade at any point that I can see- not in the sequence, not in the import:

Now, this wouldn't bother me too much, except that I can't seem to get a usable DVD of this film.  I'm curious if it has anything to do with this.  I understand that Exporting an Mpeg2-DVD will downgrade my 4k, but I expect to be able to watch it on my 45" TV without the faces looking muddied.  It's not pixelated as above, but it is somewhat blurred.

Here are my export settings:

I've tried it both with CUDA on and off, and none is workable for me.  Could you advise what I need to try?  I would really appreciate some guidance on this.  I want to make the best quality DVD of this possible, as well as deliverables for film festivals in the highest quality possible (would also appreciate advice on what settings to use for that)

Thank you in advance!!

Upon further analysis, an AVI made of the film looks great on my big screen TV, hooked up from my laptop by hdmi.  So it has to be the export or the burn.

Are you using proxies at all?  If so, what settings?

I don't know what proxies mean, sorry.

DVD's wont look good on big tv's if you dont use a dvd or BD player with upscaler.

    Why not make Bluray.

I don't have a bluray player, so I'd have no way to check it.  If that's the case, then why do all my old DVD's from before HD came along look great in my old DVD player on my large screen?  It seems like that's not an unfair expectation.  Just an honest question.

    I don't have a bluray player,

You should remedy that ASAP.  In fact, LG now makes a UHD Blu-ray player for $100.  (It'll output 1080 until you get the matching 4K TV.)

Time to step into the 21st century, dude.
