New AI Masking... kind of sucks?

Ok not sure if this is how its supposed to work, but the new masking tool... it seems prettyu restrictive in its attempt to make it easier to use. I can't seem to add vertices to a mask shape after its creates, I can't track things myself, I have to use the auto tracking feature... I honestly hate the unnecessary add of AI, but I am doing my best to try to get it back to my own similar work process. Any tips from anyone (or any similar frustrations?)
