NEW UPDATE 25.2 DRAG AND DROP INTO TIMELINE NOT WORKING.

I updated to version 25.2 and now when i go to drag and drop a clip onto the timeline, the cursor will just have a closed fist without dropping anything into the timeline. I have updated the Media Encoder also and have restarted my computer and application multiple times.

Correct answer R Neil Haugen

That would happen when you don't have the Source and Track target options set on the timeline header block. Look that up.

I am having the same issue, I struggled to fix it. I reinstalled premiere pro and than switched the workspace from learnig to edeting and now the problem seems to be fixed. I can add videos from explorer and drag to timeline.

@gavriel,

Give us some more info.

I'm on Win10 running PR 25.2.0. I have no difficulty dragging from the Source monitor to the timeline. And, I'm surprised to say, I can do it with track targeting on or with no tracks targeted at all. I can drag to an empty timeline and create a sequence, or to an existing sequence.

It's still working well for me, and I don't believe track targeting is neccessary when dragging.

did you try Neils tip, whcih worked or other "That would happen when you don't have the Source and Track target options set on the timeline header block. Look that up."  its marked as the correct answer for this thread.

Also, 25.2.1 release update came out today,  I cant find a change log for it, but try the update and the fix Neil provided.

Neil good catch!  I have not run into that for years, didnt even think of it!   You solved it.

Sure. That is SO easy to have happen. And can drive you nuts for awhile. Just like accidentally setting global fx mute on.

Both of which I've done, of course!

Ok, what I had tested, is not what you just described, but I tried it just now;

I also make the assume when you say "preview window" you mean Source,  If so, I tried with in and out points, and dragged to an empty time line, and it properly created the sequence, and added the clip with the in and out points;  (as a side note, I found the 'fist' you were talking about,  never noticed it before)

For kicks; I tried doing the same thing from the program window, it it doesn't do anything (it was never designed to work from the program window).

You might be having a MAC version specific issue, and someone with a MAC will need to look at this to see if they have the same issue.

for the record, you can use the get property feature pictured here to get more info on the media file as that might lead to some insight, the tets file I used is listed here:

It might be relevant, but are the clips your working with error free / encoded with something you can trust?   it might be worth trying to run them through media encoder and making a new file out of them to remove the chance there is some sort corruption in the video file itself that you could maybe bypass by re encoding it with Media encoder to a different container/format/bit rate?  maybe worth a try....

Using a MacBook Pro M1 with latest update, files are MP4, when I have a section of a video selected with IN/OUT markers in the preview window, and try to drag the clip onto the timeline, it doesn't add the video to the timeline but.. when I created a whole new project and dragged the same video into the time line it would work.. but only for that 1 video.. it wouldn't allow me to add anymore video clips to the new projects timeline. Didn't have this issue until I updated to the new version. Maybe it's a MAC issue with the update?
