no audio during playback premiere pro 2026

Well, as always seems to happen, after hours of trying to solve issues, after giving up and posting on whichever forum is applicable, the next effort worked.

I noted that in addition to ‘Premiere Pro’ in my updates available list, there was ‘Premiere’. I had assumed it to be a different program, but updated anyway after posting, and this has solved the issue.

Leaving the post up for anyone else finding it (likely me, in a couple of years time).

I see variations on this question but I can’t find any question that matches, so apologies if this has already been answered elsewhere.

Problem:

Opened Premiere Pro today, my last project, and have no audio during playback (was fine when I closed it yesterday).

Sound bars show the audio, I have gone into preferences > audio hardware and changed, then reverted, to my speakers

I updated Premiere Pro (now 24.1.0 build 85)

‘M’ is not selected on audio track, audio plays fine everywhere else, and I’m now stumped.

I’m using desktop, external speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)

edited to add: I’ve opened other, previously audio-working-during-playback projects, same symptom. Imported other mp4 files, same issue. Also cleared media cache, and reset preferences.
