Object Mask expansion tool greyed out

I figured it out. When using the Object Mask, you have to choose between smooth or sharp in the program window.
 

If you choose sharp, expansion becomes available.
 

Seems counter intuitive wording as I would think smooth is the better word for this option. I’d venture most will likely expand and feather for a smooth blending result.
