Optimum Project settings for Panasonic SDT750 AVCHD?

Hi there,

There are 5 video recording modes on my Panasonic SDT750 all at 1920x1080 VBR in AVCHD format according to the manual at different bitrates as follows - I am not sure of the audio recording format as all it says is Audio Compression Dolby Digital/5.1 ch using the built-in microphone;

1080/50p 28mbps

HA 17Mbps

HG 13Mbps

HX 9Mbps

HE 5Mbps

I normally shoot at the highest quality HA mode (ignoring 1080/50p) onto 64GB SD cards for a maximum of 8.5 hours which is more than enough and wondered what the optimum Project settings might be?

The intended use will be training presentations showing either direct from PC to Projector/Screen or as is more usual these days a large Plasma/LED/OLED display and secondly online self training modules on a website/portal which brings me neatly onto my next question.

When exporting the videos what would you recommend as the optimum formats to use for both of the intended uses bearing in mind filesize directly from the PC is not a limiting factor where for online consumption/download it will as always be a compromise between filesize & quality along with the ability to play on a wide range of computers.

I'm not even thinking of the most suitable export format for mobile devices such as phones & tablets yet!

Up to this point I have been exporting to a Twitter 720p/1080p preset just to preview some rough cuts sharing my desktop over Teams & uploading to a website for proofing.

Any and all related hints, tips, gotcha's gratefully received.

Thanks & kind regards,

Correct answer Ann Bens

Film in max quality. I would set the camera to pcm (stereo).

Best project or rather sequence settings are those that match the footage.

Right click on clip in project panel: New sequence from clip.

Thank you for taking the time to reply Ann. I am a complete beginner so please bear with me...

If I understand you correctly then it doesn't matter what my Project Settings are then when I first create a project as I can use the above New Sequence from Clip as soon as I import some footage into the Project bin?

So after I have imported it I do as you suggest and it drops the .mts clip into the timeline for me.

I then select Export/Media and when the window comes up I guess I should click the Match Sequence Settings box?

So I do this and I do see the settings change but when I tried to run the saved .mpeg clip it couldn't and Windows Media Player told me it needed a Codec?

I clicked the box and it downloaded an mpeg2 Codec from somewhere(?) and then the video played.

Quality looked good but on checking the saved clip it is now nigh on twice the size of the original file at 40.6MB versus the original filesize of 23.6MB which seems to defeat the object of saving a bare clip with no effects or anything added.

This can't be right can it unless I have misunderstood?

And who marks my question as being the correct answer? I don't recall doing it...

Thanks & kind regards,

Match Sequence settings is not the way for you (at this time).

Do not install codecs as they are all either in Windows or Premiere.

Mpeg2 is a different codec then your mts (mpeg4) files use hence the filesize difference.

Pick a Youtube preset under H.264.

I dont know who is quite trigger happy when it comes to marking answers correct.

But on the otherhand there are users that dont bother to come back or mark an answer correct.

As a complete beginner, you sure picked a very steep learning video editing program.

Might want to hit the LEARN button in the welcome screen before venturing on a real project.
