Play button on premiere pro has become unresponsive when I try and STOP a sequence playing

Bizarre, since earlier this morning, the play button works to start playing back a sequence, but will not STOP playback. Driving me nuts. Anyone know what could be causing this? MacOS Big Sur on a Macbook pro.

Wasn't first thing. But I cut a little bit off a clip and then the proble seems to have resolved. Strange.
