playback freezing on macbook pro 2021

Hi,

I have an issue on my new computer: Premier pro works fine (except the render errors when I use multiple effects on a shot)  but the playback often freezes, doesn't crash the system just stops playing.

This happens especially when I'm scrubbing through files, working fast, making in and out point selections in the timeline.

I am able to save the project. I force quit Adobe Premiere and than I can reopen and edit again.

My system:

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021)

Apple M1 Max

64 GB

This happens when the footage is on any disk I use.

software: latest update.

Any ideas? it's very annoying and looks so unprofessional when I'm with a client.

Correct answer Kees filmeditor

I resetted my preferences and I'm working for hours now without a freeze.

Solution seems to be: "option-click" on adobe premiere icon to open app and reset preferences.

Hej Kees,

did that problem ever occure again? I have exactly the same problem. I'll try the reset and hope for the best. It is extremely annoying since the MacBook Pro otherwise performs flawless.

After the reset the problem occured again. I don't know what the cause is. But right now, I'm working on a project without proxies (footage from sony fx6 and blackmagic raw) and no problem at all. I'm also thinking there might be a correlation with hardware attached. I'm working on location right now, so I'm not attached to my blackmagic ultrastudio 4K for example.

Hi Kees,

Sorry. What kind of footage are you using? If it is Long GOP H.264, you may need to transcode or create proxies. A Mac M1 does not have an Intel iGPU or an NVIDIA card which both can really speed up the processing of H.264 files using Quick Sync or GPU decoding/encoding. You may need to set up a different workflow than you are used to for now, but I have not had time to any side by side workflow tests with H.264 and proxies.

For sure, make sure that you have the latest version installed so you have the benefit of all the M1 updates.

Thanks,
Kevin

Thanks for responding!

always on the latest updates (hoping for a fix).

I'm experiencing this freeze in different projects using different footage (never h264 though). Either raw footage of arri alexa, mxf from the sony fx6, or blackmagic raw from ursa mini. I usually make prores proxies to smooth the editing experience, but the system freezes with or without these proxies. I don't see a correlation between codec and this problem.

the only thing I can do is don't push too much buttons while searching for the right in and out points using JKL-shortcuts. This is when it happens. But I want to work on a stable system. 🙂

I believe this MacBook pro should be pretty powerful with the graphics. I maxed out all the specs. I'm not sure if adobe is using it in the most efficient way. Everything runs really smooth and suddenly freezes.

For the memory:

I checked activity monitor during a crash and there was 22 GB RAM assigned to premiere. Not too much I believe. I was thinking of too much RAM assigned to premiere perhaps. I didn't touch the standard settings though.
