Question

Playback stops completely (unresponsive)

When working on an edit in the latest version of Premiere Pro I will open the project, start editing, and within a few minutes all playback stops. Hitting play/spacebar does nothing. Scrubbing yields no audio or video playback. When I double click on a clip to open it in the Source monitor nothing shows up. If I close and open the project it’s totally fine again for a couple minutes then it happens again.

Also, when I open the project, as I play back an interview with audio the audio cuts out after about 3 seconds. If I pause and hit play again it does the same thing, stopping after 3 seconds.

So far I’ve tried:

  • Restarting the app/my computer
  • Clearing cache
  • Updating to the latest version
  • Audio hardware set correctly
  • Audio sample rate matches project, timeline, and playback settings.

Anyone else run into this?

Thanks!

    I appreciate your help.
Why do you think I would be having this issue on one machine and not another?

    Hi,

See if any auto updates for macOS occurred while your project was idle. Something changed in your system, and you might not have been aware of it. That’s happened to me.

I’ll keep my eye out for any similar cases. I hope I can help you figure out what happened. Can you try a new project on the Mac?

    Sorry for the hassle.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Here is a sample of the timeline once it stops working, seemingly for no reason.

    Hello there, @PaperFortress
Thanks for the post and the screen movie you sent. I don't see anything obviously wrong in the timeline itself, but the fact that playback, scrubbing, and even loading clips into the Source Monitor all stop working makes me wonder if this is either project-related or something interfering with Premiere at a deeper level.

    A few questions:

    • What are your system specs (CPU, GPU, RAM, and OS version)?

    • What type of footage is this (H.264/H.265, screen recordings, camera originals, etc.)?

    • Are the media files stored locally, on external storage, or on a NAS/network drive?

    I'd also suggest two tests:

    1. Launch Premiere while pressing the Shift key to bring up the Reset Options dialog, then disable third-party plug-ins and open the project again.

    2. Create a brand-new project and import the same footage. If the footage behaves normally in a new project, that would point toward project corruption rather than a media or hardware issue.

Let us know what kind of media you're working with and whether the same clips exhibit the behavior in a fresh project. Sorry for the frustration. I hope we can help you.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Thanks for the response Kevin!

Worth noting, this was working before and suddenly today it stopped functioning properly. Every time it happens I have to save, quit, and repoen thr project and it works for a handful of monites then stops working again.

    My system:
    2021 MacBook Pro M1
    32GB RAM
    Tahoe 26.3
    250GB Free Storage

Footage type is mixed but largely Apple ProRes 422

Footage is stored on a 4TB SSD connected with a USB-C (I tested multiple cables).

I am running Autokroma BlackMagic Studio Plugin (updated to the latest version). I cant disable this as I’m working with BlackMagic footage as well as other footage.

I’m going to check and see if this project will run the same on my PC. After that I will Will report back.
