Playback stuttering

I have a long standing project so running PP 2018 with Dynamic Link to AE 2018. Although there are a lot of layers on AE it plays back OK in AE on 1/4 resolution. However PP playback stutters even on 1/4 resolution. When I looked at the Project Settings/General/VideoRendering and Playback to see if I could improve matters I saw that the Renderer: was greyed out. Why would this be? Is this a hardware problem? I am no techy so any help would be appreciated. Thanks - John.

The dynamic link is slower if the project of After Effects is heavy and has a lot of layers. Even though it playback fine in After Effects but it may not play back perfectly in premiere pro because you running two software in the background which requires more memory and resources of CPU & GPU. It's better you render and replace the After Effects Composition or take a video render from After Effects and use it in Premiere pro.

I guess you mean that you only have the option of mercury playback engine Software and mercury playback engine GPU Acceleration is greyed out. If this is the case then it means that your GPU driver is not up to update or your GPU does not support the  GPU Acceleration because maybe it is an old GPU.

Many thanks, Vishu. That makes sense. AE is certainly heavy with layers. I've finished editing my various scene comps in AE so I'll follow your advice and render and replace the AE comps in PP so I can carry on and work on the audio in PP.

Everything in the Renderer is greyed out. I would have thought it would have at least had the Software only option highlighted if that was the only option available. I certainly have an old machine as I started this project with PP/AE 2015.
